A lot of words can be associated with music — beautiful, happy, soulful, dramatic — but one that is rarely ever used is “boring”.
It’s also not a word that’s embraced by the Valley Festival Singers, who have been entertaining the Fraser Valley with song for decades now and recently reached their 50th anniversary.
That’s half a century of building a legacy of meaningful and exciting music, said the group’s director, Rob Workman.
Since forming in 1976, the Valley Festival Singers have grown to 40 members and have performed hundreds of concerts throughout the region.
“The Valley Festival Singers are proud to breathe life into Abbotsford’s art scene,” said Workman.
“I think a lot of people believe that you have to go to Vancouver to hear quality music, but VFS are here to give our community access to unforgettable musical experiences.”
The group is planning another set of what it hopes to be unforgettable musical experiences later this month, with three 50th-anniversary concerts planned.
The first of these shows is on April 17 at Langley Mennonite Fellowship from 7 to 9 p.m.
This will be followed up by two Abbotsford shows at Calvin Presbyterian Church on April 18 and 19. The April 18 show takes place from 7 to 9 p.m., while the final show is from 3 to 5 p.m.
All three of these performances will take the audience on a musical journey through the history of the Valley Festival Singers, including some of the choir’s favourite hits performed during past years.
Johann Sebastian Bach’s Jesu, meine Freude is just one of many pieces that attendees can expect to hear, and is a direct throwback to the very first Valley Festival Singers concert ever, which also featured this famous motet.
A string quartet will help bring these songs to life and emphasize the magic that Workman said happens when a group of passionate individuals come together and use their voices as one.
“Choral communities are built on a beautiful companionship of trust and vulnerability,” said Workman.
He hopes people will come to support the group as they publicly celebrate their past 50 years of dedication to local music and give a nod to the next 50 years.
Tickets for the Valley Festival Singers’ 50th-anniversary shows can be purchased at valleyfestivalsingers.com.
